Not receiving replies nor bounce reports
December 12, 2012, 08:47:54 pm
CiviCRM 4.1.5
Drupal 7.14

I've recently begun testing CiviMail with CCRM 4.1.5. My configuration setting for civismtp.datest.org  check okay using the account settings screen at www.civismtp.com.

The mail reports show the correct number of intended recipients but also shows successful deliveries to be the same number when one of the email addresses is set to an invalid address. There was no bounce received for this address.

Also, all the users in the test group replied to these mail but only one reply was received. In subsequent mailings, I received no replies.

All the users opened the email (so they told me) but I only show three opens out of eight. I realize they may be looking at a text only version so I'll try to control that better in a future test.

In this case, I am using the option Track Replies?    Recipients' replies are sent to a CiviMail specific address instead of the sender's address so they can be stored within CiviCRM. I have not ticked the Forward Replies box.

The received email headers are showing both the reply and bounce formats for the VERP address. I am not really sure where the replies are supposed to go. What is meant by "a CiviMail specific address"?

Any troubleshooting hints will be appreciated.

Hi Dennis,

please tick the "forward replies" box.
also please send to me the invalid address that did not bounce so I can investigate.

Thanks for the quick reply, Shane. I am preparing a new test now.

I still need to know what  Recipients' replies are sent to a CiviMail specific address instead of the sender's address so they can be stored within CiviCRM. means.

The invalid address for bounce testing will be info@vietfeir.com

check here for the civimail specific address stuff:

http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=18415.0

info@vietfeir.com  *does not* produce a bounce as far as I can tell.  I just sent an email to it from my personal email and *did not* receive a bounce.

our mail logs also show this address as being successfully sent

Sorry, Shane. The test case for the bounce should have the email address of inf0@vietfeir.com

It did not get reported as a bounce. The report shows that it was delivered successfully.

I'm still reviewing the other results.

inf0@vietfeir.com does not produce a bounce for me.  The receiving server must produce a valid bounce for us to track it.  Maybe the server is taking a while to send the bounce.

My vietfeir.com server does not seem to hand bounces correctly. I'm hosting another domain there and it is bouncing unknown mailboxes so I'm not sure yet what the problem is.

I did get a bounce report this time. However, no replies are being received.

did you tick the "forward replies"  box?

to which email address are you expecting replies to be sent?

Forward replies box is ticked.

I am expecting replies will be sent to the "From Mail Address" that I chose.

Shane from UAS has provided a fix for 4.1.5 which works. Here is the text of his message to me:

we have a solution for you specifically, but we need to come up with
something more comprehensive for CCRM / CiviMail in general.

for you to fix the issue in your current installation, you can do the following:

[1] open the file sites/all/modules/civicrm/api/v3/Mailing.php
[2] edit line 122.  currently it looks like this:

          array('job_id', 'event_queue_id', 'hash', 'replyTo'),

          it should look like this:

          array('job_id', 'event_queue_id', 'hash'),

[3] save the file and test

I have tested this and it works
