I second b0b_z's solution.  I cleaned out the temp folder -- sites/default/files/civicrm/templates_c and the activities started showing up again.  I wonder if Cleanup Caches would have had the same effect?  Should have tried that first.  But regardless, clearing out templates_c worked.
