Gotta love when two issues get fixed about the same time; I hadn't checked the forum post in a while, and yesterday also posted a .patch for this as well.

Sounds like hbergin's code is more comprehensive and doesn't have the subject marked as required (just a required statement it looks like), so can update the files accordingly.

hbergin, not a problem; I'm just more glad that it advanced.  I've been waiting to upgrade my test site mostly as I didn't feel like re-doing the changes.  More happy its moving than anything else.

This patch was written for 4.3, but never incorporated into the core. Anyone know why, or if it's coming in 4.4?

It shows the issue as fixed in 4.4
