Hello all, great post. From our experience, in most of Latin American countries only 1 last name field is used, even if it's a compound surname. So García Lorca will be in the "Last Name" field. However, in Spain is very common (even mandatory) to use 2 last names. So adding a new, optional, Second Last Name sounds the best approach leaving the Last Name field untouched.
Also agree with Capo's considerations about inline editions.
We will take a look at the patch and see if we can test / contribute back.

Regards

Alejandro

Hello all, after last CiviDay and some other initiatives (ie: the Madrid workgroup) the interest in CiviCRM in spanish speaking countries is growing exponentially. Following this, seems that this issue about compound surnames has been coming up frequently.

Sounds like Alan's patch was rejected at some point because it was making too many changes (http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-13097). Also sounds like lack of sponsorship was also blocking a MIH. Question here, does it make sense to go with a MIH if Alan's patch (that seemed to be working OK) is almost there?

Alan, how can we help with the patch? This issue is planned for 4.6 with Trivial priority but, at least for spanish speaking users, it should be great to have it working before.

Does it make sense to make an extension?

Best

Alejandro

Hello

We made a post in wiki to put some ideas and go forward with "issue" http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Compound+Surnames-Draft

Anybody have some idea or opinion to make more consistent the development?

The idea is continue with the https://github.com/civicrm/civicrm-core/pull/1364 developed by Alan https://github.com/asp.

Thanks!
