Note that for reasonably sized data sets, the query to generate the a-z bar is quite expensive also. So making it optional will speed things up a wee bit

I'm a bit late to this topic, but I'd like to add a vote for faster jump-to-contact functionality. I'm in the processes of deploying CiviCRM (Drupal variety) for a small organization and I think one of the most common use scenarios will be entering offline contributions. At present, it takes five clicks to get to the entry form, two of which seem rather unnecessary.

The first step in this process is of course finding the contact. The Contact Search module seems very promising, as I can just start typing the name and it immediately shows me the one I'm looking for. Unfortunately, clicking on the name simply populates the search field. Then I have to click search, wait for the single search result, and click on that. I really should have been done as soon as I selected a name from the list.

Perhaps this search control is trying to do too many things? It might be nice to have a control that is dedicated to jumping immediately to a known contact as quickly as possible. This is going to be a key step in all sorts of data entry and data perusal tasks, so it should be a high priority for streamlining.

Thanks

Hey - well I am glad you posted that last one or I would have missed this thread all together.  ;) (as have lots of users by the look of it)
Quote
1. What do you use CiviCRM for?
Very complex political party for internal, campaigning and Parliamentary Outreach - so involves most aspects of civiCRM other than civiGrants.

2. What are the most common scenarios in which you use CiviCRM (that specifically involve the Contact Summary or Search Results pages)?
Updating contact details, editing Custom Data Tabs, Batch Update by Profile, constructing Smart and Standard Groups, Exporting, offline Participants and Contributions and Memberships.

3. Describe the click path you use to accomplish your actions.
Won't detail this as I suspect we are past the 'use by date' on this posting. (Happy to be told otherwise)

4. What are your "pain points" on the Contact Summary or Search Results pages (screenshots below)? Do you have any specific recommendations as to how to improve them?
Managing households - would be good if Contact Summary showed the persons address was a "Shared Household". Also various elements of uncertainty around changes made to an individuals address when they are in a 'Shared Household, and whether this will change the Shared Household address or will cause the person to cease to be in the Household. Need the "Shared Household Address" to show the Name of the Household.
Some buttons on the Contact Summary that would allow one to jump directly to 'Add Contributions' etc would cut out a step.
Organisation address not showing when the Employee of (or other types of relationship) are ticked.
Advanced Search - would be good to have Groups as a drop down box rather than a small scroll box which is a pain.
Results Page - I often use the A-Z - happy if it becomes a 'select if needed' option though. IS that what was meant by "alpha-filter at the top of the Search Results page".
Rows per Page, should be at top of results table as well as bottom.
Sidestep the "GO" button somehow (can't believe the number of times I select a "More Action' and forget to hit GO.  :P
Sidebar search field - i use this heaps and love it - in Firefox!! - in other browsers it is more of a pain. I am astonished how quickly I can just type in a set of letters, hit Enter and hey presto have the results of all such Contacts displayed. Yes a button by it that allows me to jump straight in to the record would be good.

Probably enough for now since the ship has probably left port  ;)

1. In 2.1 We've changed the contact search box behavior. If there is an exact match, we jump to the view contact page

2. We'll answer the shared address field on this forum topic: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,3482.msg15403.html#msg15403

3. Note that you can customize your templates and add buttons / links that are part of your org's workflow. I suspect irrespective of what we do/add, there will be cases that we will not be able to cover.  Customizing the template to meet your specific needs is a good way, IMO
