Alright, so logging in via the mobile client on the website (while using the ajax backend) won't work? You have to log in through the CMS?

Also, there was no warning or error when I checked the log.  I looked at the source of the page and there is literally no information being received by my browser.

I don't know if it works or not, but it's not an officially maintained way. Any reason not to use the normal login form?

have you disabled in your php displaying error_messages? have you enabled the debug mode in civi?

(it probably means it silently crashed somewhere)

But anyway, rest.php call isn't meant to be used directly by an end user, as the key/api_key isn't supposed to be shared

I figured a bunch of things out thanks to your help;  I got the client working with the newest version (4.3.4), and it's up and running on the mobile site if you want to check it out.
