Although I would still like to have a custom query page as it is faster and easier, I did find a way within CiviCRM to accomplish the same thing, it just takes a few steps.

Basically, as I've stated before, if my goal is to find contacts who have Grace memberships but do NOT have Current memberships, then I can use Smart Groups and Tags to accomplish this task.

1. Using Advanced Search, search for all contacts with Current -or- Grace memberships, and make a Smart Group out of them.
2. Using Advanced Search, search for all contacts with a Current membership only.   Tag them all as "Has Current" (or whatever).
3. Search for all contacts in the Smart Group tagged "Has Current" and remove them from the Smart Group.
4. What is left are contacts who have Grace memberships but do NOT have Current memberships.

Although it takes a few steps, his technique could be used for many different types of "NOT IN" searches.
