In the for what it's worth department ...

That is worth a lot! Good to know that someone else use solution 3 (with success...?)

Are those families ever adressed together (in a snail mail...)?

And if so, how do you do that?

I've struggled with Households and Individuals as well.

I currently use households but don't really like how it works. In my mind a Household should aggregate the donations of all individuals within that household. If Households did this then I think that would solve alot of issues.

For example:

Doe Household  --donated 200.00
-John Doe  --donated 100.00
-Jane Doe --donated 300.00

Under the Household Contributions tab you'd have listed 3 contributions (see attached image for example)

I also set up a site and decided not to use households (households seemed like a lot of trouble with not much benefit).
I used a post hook to update contacts' "Postal Greeting" field to include the name of their spouse.

we also tend to steer clients away from HH - but think i found a use case where it made sense.

fairly off topic this one (who me? but you have been warned)

People can join an organisation as a 'family' - but this is not an inherited membership - it is a discounted rate for anyone under the same roof.

And when we pull up a member we need to see the membership status of all those 'under the same roof'

so our solution was to link the individuals to the household so we could go

- if we are interested in Person A
- grab their HH
- grab all people with Relationship X at the HH (which includes Person A)

not pretty but better than having all the individuals related to each other via lots of spaghetti

What exactly do you do, when you grab?

Yep sorry that wasn't a very helpful explanation - but like i said i was heading off topic - in our case we are using Views to be able to do this since it lets us join various ends of various relationships together.

since this discussion happens periodically, a few thoughts and comments:

For folks who do find the household concept and important addition but lacking in Civi, might be worth to do the foll:

a. Figure out what features are needed to make the feature more useful and document / spec it out on wiki. FrTommy had one specific suggestion

b. Once u'll have a decent set of features in item a, might be worth a blog post to get the community involved and discussing it.

c. Round up a group of like minded orgs who want the feature and then help get the important features in item a developed and/or funded
