Great. thanks for clarification!  I was having issues when using a price set, and will look further, but consider this thread closed.

I realise that this thread is closed but I ran into a similar issue (ie of not wanting to prompt the user to enter the contact details for each participant being registered) and found a different solution, that might be relevant in other use cases.... http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,31407.0.html
