I've had that exact position on quite a few occasions. So far, I have never been right, and putting the hacks in an extension is smoothing a lot the upgrades.

And usually, that's not "in the event you decide to upgrade", but rather that external "events force you to decide to upgrade" (cf. security, bug fixes, extension upgrades...) ;)

I wish your case is the exception that confirms the rule.
