Groups Dashlet ?
October 01, 2014, 09:58:47 am
Hi

I find the overview of groups very usefull, but a bit too far away for a normal user. Is there a dashlet to show a list of groups ? Would it be hard to make ? How would I do that ?

curious,

hi

what is the purpose of showing a 'normal user' (whatever that might be in your case) to having a dashlet of groups - what would they do with that list?

You use groups to segment your constituency. An example segment would be 'American contacts' and 'European contacts'. Currently, the only way to get there by default is from contacts > (scroll down) > manage groups, and click 'contacts' far on the right.

That is not a user-centric approach : s/he doesnt want to manage the groups, s/he wants to access the whole segment and browse through it. And its relevant enough to put it higher in the navigation I think.

So I mean 'all groups', and the normal user is the contact maintainers.

First, I just renamed the menu entry to 'View Groups'.
Just now, I created a seperate menu item, so its 'dashboard','search','contacts','groups',...
Its still not ideal, but it'll do for now. I might actually list the most important groups under that menu item myself eventually.

thanks,

Not sure I understand the need still, but if you use search contacts, you get the list of all groups in the drop down and you can search to get all the contact in that group. is this the use case?

Yes, thats it. That list, from the dropdown, with those links, in a dashlet :-)

I now hardcoded most of the groups in a menu dropdown for the client. It made them very happy. Even though its rather useless. because .. why the hell do you actually want to *browse* all contacts. But they do. Not that its usefull, because there will likely be 100s or 1000s, so if you actually want to *find* one, you use the search.

Still, its comforting to first see a plain old list.
And then decide, ok that list is too big, lets use the search.
