We are also getting this error when we try to create a new smart group from search results— we get a WSOD instead of the Smart Group configuration page, and the "Cannot access protected property… Edit.php on line 502" written to the error log.

This site is a Drupal 7 site we upgraded from 4.4.6. to 4.5.0 and then 4.5.1. It is an Aegir (and thus multi-site) installation, though it is the only site active on this platform.

My instinct was a PHP compatibility issue, since this server is running PHP 5.5.15, so it is disappointing to hear that it is occurring on older versions as well. This site has no custom templates or extensions.

Getting this issue also on a site that we upgraded to 4.5.3
No multi-site involved, PHP 5.3.3

I've submitted a bug report - https://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-15613 - with salient information like backtraces.
