Good discussion. I'm interested to learn how others use the search facilities - just shows that people use the tools in different ways for different reasons, and therefore that flexibility is key in terms of the design if those tools (which as a I recall is a basic principle in information architecture terms). The feedback I get from clients is that they don't understand why they don't get any results when they enter 'firstname lastname', so clearly there is a perceived need for flexibility on this, as well as improved documentation (which I'm very happy to help with) whatever the final decision is on what gets implemented.

In terms of usability I'd also like to put another item into the mix: can we get rid of the requirement to key in a comma if using the sort name option - seems to me to that from the perspective of an ordinary user this would help.
