Import option to mark an address as primary = boolean
November 11, 2008, 09:15:36 pm
How to make this one import?

A client wants to import several addresses per client.
The types of addresses vary for example home, work, parents and any of these could be primary.

So the spread sheet columns could be

FIRST LAST ADDRESS CITY STATE ZIP IS_PRIMARY ADDRESS_TWO CITY_TWO STATE_TWO IS_PRIMARY
smith, james, address one, city, state, 01352, 0, address two, city two, state two, 01223, 1

Otherwise the client would have to import (I think) one spread sheet per location type (3 in this example)  that needs to be primary since that location type needs to be in the first column so it gets marked as primary by CiviCRM import.

Just wondering if this conclusion is the only way to do this for now and if the above is a good suggestion for future import options?

ps.. it looks like this http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRMDOC/Import+Fields was like the above

Allowing user to map a "Primary Location" boolean column seems like a useful feature, although we'd have to think about the implementation because I don't think there are any "related pairs" currently in the import logic (i.e. column X controls handling for column Y). You can file an issue for a future release - and as usual consider contributing or sponsoring the issue if it's a priority.

Would the other option be to allow us to have a column to import which has the Location Type for the address we want used as the Primary location?

And do I take it from what Alfred says, that if we are importing several address for contacts, then the one that is first is the one that the system sets to Primary?

Ok - Alfred did a good job updating documentation so that answers my last question. Though it makes me wonder what happens if eg work addresses come before home address, but are blank - does that make home the Primary - guess I will have to run a test or two.
