Definitely every host is different here.  I know myself, having used CiviCRM, make sure the clients I have that want to use it have the proper settings on their hosting accounts to ensure it works.  I make the changes myself for their accounts.  After going through so much to get my installations working on third party shared hosts it became frustrating to say the least.  No point in sharing that frustration with my clients.

I remember a few times having running into memory issues, timeout issues.  Lobo was nice enough to explain it to me and so I switched hosts.

Nothing is more frustrating, and I should know, that having to fight with your hosting techs can be pain in the arse to get such an awesome application working.  It is very important that if you are going to use CiviCRM that you research hosts, ask them questions.  Send the system requirements of the online app to make sure it will work.

I am new to Joomla and to CiviCRM.  I am using GoDaddy's cheap hosting (apologies to Lobo) and attempting to install CiviCRM.  I have read through all of the install docs and some of the forums to discover that (correct me if I am wrong) that CiviCRM does not like shared servers and I should not spend any more time on it.  Is that pretty much the case?

Hmm - I think many of the posts here have indicated that all shared server / hosting platforms are NOT created equal. Have you checked out the community maintained Hosting Providers page:
