My settings are as you stated.

Failed to set sender: mymailaccount@example.com [SMTP: Invalid response code received from SMTP (outbound mail) server while attempting to send email. This is often caused by a misconfiguration in the CiviCRM Outbound Email settings. Please verify the settings at Administer CiviCRM >> Global Settings >> Outbound Email (SMTP). The mail library returned the following error message: authentication failure [SMTP: Authentication failed. (code: 221, response: 2.0.0 closing connection q18sm4418579pog.9)]

So, it appears that by changing that in my settings, it's connecting... but authorization is failing.

I'm not sure why that'd be, the help file states this :

Make sure that you entered @gmail.com after your username. For example: john.doe@gmail.com
I'm going to try this and report back.

I figured out why the authentication failed!  :-)

You need to enable IMAP in the mail preferences for the account you're sending mail from.
also append @domain.com where domain.com is your website.

Thanks for your assistance!
