Although a bit old topic - thank you vhlede for posting this working solution.

Regarding dharmatech's redirection solution:
I didn't want to install the path_redirect module only for this solution (since it is not possible to achieve this with the URL alias), so I included the full path to the profile instead in the login page direct argument.

However, it should be noted that this argument could handle the other special characters, but not the ampersand. I therefore had to replace it with %26:

?destination=civicrm/profile?reset=1%26gid=48
