Is the ACL creation already part of the OG module ?

I thought that OGs were administered from the Drupal side and that the OG creator/leader has ultimate control over the OG.  We have a situation where chapters are regionally based and chapter leaders may change as frequently as yearly.  What happens to the OG then?  If OGs will work for us it would be great as we will have 250 chapters to set up, but I did think there was a problem with where ownership of the group and hence its members lies.

Your comments are truly appreciated. I am a non-techie trying to grasp CivicCRM and understand which CMS- Joomla or Drupal would be better for my organization! Thanks a ton for your answers to my 2 questions.

1. From the previous discussions, I am assuming that Civic CRM accomodates the following chapter based operating structure. Please let me know if otherwise.

My non profit has a chapter based operating structure.

Our organization is split into multiple chapters [ based upon geography and other factors].
Each Chapter shall consist of volunteers and shall have a committee to manage the chapter and shall have access to information pertaining to the chapter alone. Similarly, the organization shall have a central committee to oversee the chapters and monitor all information.

2. Additionally, I would like to know if DRUPAL or Joomla is better for this operating structure for the website portion [details below].

This is the part which visitors [donors, volunteers, event participants] will view and obtain information about the charity.
This portal shall be dynamic and shall be customized for each chapter within the organization.

For eg: Our global domain [ consider xyz.com] will have content reflecting that of the overall ogranization and many chapters.

Sub domains reflecting the chapter: for eg: njny.xyz.com will use content from the main domain.
However, specific sections of pages and additional pages will have chapter specific information.
Additionally, the visitor will have event registration and other information specific to the chapter when visiting the chapter.

This is not a direct answer for any of the above, but perhaps is something jday, AudreyKate and neveen need to be aware of (if they aren't already - and if I've got it right).

If you set up smart groups for your chapters you can set permissions to let the chapter leaders view or edit (your choice) the details of the contacts in that chapter but, as things currently stand, the smart group a contact belongs to is not recorded on that contact's record.  Only 'normal' group membership is recorded on the group tag.

This means that if you have a lot of chapters/groups (we will have 250) it won't be easy to respond to a phone call to your head office from a contact asking "What group do I belong to? I've deleted the email with that information."

If this will be a problem for you, you might like to make a contribution to the "Smart Groups on Contact Tabs" Make-it-Happen campaign  http://civicrm.org/index.php?q=civicrm/contribute/transact&reset=1&id=3&widgetID=1    $3000 is needed for this campaign as of today.
