hmm - tried this on 'sandbox' with the 'update' selected; got pretty
much the same error:

"unrecoverable error
Sorry. A non-recoverable error has occurred.

    DB Error: already exists

Database Error Code: Duplicate entry 'Dept of State, Office of the Geo' for key 2, 1062

    Return to home page."

In our case we make custom data, bu this should work as well...I would think...

thanks -
Chris

hmm, any reason why you are using the institution name "'Dept of State, Office of the Geo" as the external identifier?

hmmm - using 'update' doesn't work either; apparently it bombs when it hits a duplicate :-(

tried to create a new custom data field for this info, but I seem unable to do so on the sandbox.

Again, this info is in a flat csv, and we really are doing two imports: one for the individuals (which is failing, and the subject of this thread) and a separate one for the organizations, in which we just pay attention to this column, and skip duplicates.  That import worked fine.

So, what does CiviCRM consider a 'duplicate' ?  all characters of all imported fields are equal, etc?  I can manually try to clean the records..

at a loss, besides just burning huge amounts of time to manually enter it, putting on my snorkel and diving into the sources; trying to use the APIs, etc..  ???

whatever it takes!!

re: "'Dept of State, Office of the Geo" this is just representative of the foo in the legacy Excel file, that needs to be merged/etc with  "'Dept of State, Office of the Geographer" that appears in another row, in another column!

Again, the original strategy was to just import these things with some foo custom data columns; merge them, and then delete the custom data. I know this is horribly expensive in terms of DB, but its a one-time thing...

I will probably start playing about with the SQL importer and cleaning things, but...I want my garbage in! (so I can crank lots of garbage out! or at least until I can clean the rows...)
