I'm not sure what you mean "your initial suggestion". When I said 5 hours that was an accurate record of time spent by me so far at that point.  By the time the custom search was finished and published on the Wiki (yesterday) my total hours were at 9.5.

Most of that time was spent using trial-and-error methods trying to get the QuickForm and CiviCRM framework to make the form work in the way that I wanted to and display results in a way that I wanted.  The team was very helpful in working past the roadblocks, the documentation of QuickForm and CiviCRM was less helpful.  Writing the SQL query was less than 1 hour.
