Does Sending Bulk SMS Messages Work?

My searches just turn up next to nothing. Is/has anyone been able to send bulk SMS messages to contacts?

My understanding is that you would need an SMS gateway - do you have one?

I know that the gateway we are looking at actually receives SMS as emails (ie. 021574835@gatewaydomain.com) & then they translate it to an SMS message

Thanks for the assistance. None of our clients have an SMS gateway. Any tips on selecting an SMS gateway.

1. contact andrew perry from community builders au (on http://civicrm.org/professional/). they've taken the original SMS code (from 1.4) and ported and got it working in 2.x?

2. when i first did the SMS stuff i used and tested with the clickatell SMS gateway. it worked quite well. i think they are one of the leading SMS providers

Hi Mark

We have it up and running using our SMS gateway and have been wanting to contribute the code back for some time now.  What we are developing with the gateway is a way to process SMS replies through CiviCRM too, which will be awesome, but has delayed us a little.

This may or may not be important for some uses, so let me know what you have in mind and I'll see how we can best help get you going.

I've written a drupal module that lets you bulk send SMS to civicrm contacts (it integrates with views and so with civicrm).
due to a bug in civicrm <= 2.2.5 you cannot filter out phone types (it's fixed now in 2.2.6). Please read the README.txt first.

i put this here, let me know eventually,
it's in alpha stage =)

this is way cool :) thanx for stepping up and doing the needed stuff. Thanx for blogging about it too :) Definitely adds some much needed functionality to civicrm and does a good job integrating the right modules :)

Interesting - we have a client who has been asking about this but has minimal budget to implement so will hope we can give it a test for them.

Can you clarify who the recipients sees the msg as coming from and what happens to any replies?

Also I need to think about how this can be pushed back to record it as an Activity for the recipients.

well, this module just covers the sending half so about "what happens to any replies"
i can say: there's support to handle replies in the smsframework module itself.
regarding "who the recipients sees the msg as coming from", it depends from your SMS gateway settings.
finally "how this can be pushed back to record it as an Activity for the recipients" i guess this is pretty simple to do
programatically (maybe using one of the module hooks or just hardcoding it)

With the option of choosing Mobile Phone providers, is there a module someone could use to tag an email domain to the mobile provider?

Ie, AT&T uses <phonenumber>@txt.att.net.   It would be nice to define this by their phone provider, and CiviCRM would have an emailing option of SMS-email.  This would save a LOT of data entry under the contacts. 

The reason I raise this point, is I am supporting a Deaf non-profit.  The deaf live by email and SMS.  90% of the members of the non-profit are deaf.  Saving time on this data entry (or allowing mobile provider global changes) will save lots of data entry time.

Anyone?  Thoughts?  Developers that want to pick my brain more (coding this is above my skill ability)

My understanding is that most of the larger telecom providers discourage use of their email gateway to send SMS messages (in bulk). You are better off using an SMS provider like click-a-tell.  If you search the forums for SMS you'll find some work that other folks have done regarding SMS and CiviCRM
