What happened with the progress of this thread? Things just kind of stopped. I'm currently working on a project which requires similar "max_participants" for price sets. Did anything ever come out of this?

The new 3.2 release includes the ability to set a "Participant Count" for each configured price set field. The count is then decremented against the event's Maximum Participants. This was a sponsored feature addition.

Example for a fundraising dinner:
Price Set Field = "Table for 8", Participant Count = 8 (so each one of these 'purchased' decrements 8 against max participants)
Price Set Field = "Individual Ticket", Participant Count =1

... a bit different than max counts for each price set item, but covers SOME use cases.

AFAIK the original "Max # for each price set field" has not made progress. If you are interested in working on this or sponsoring - let us know.
