Making progress over here.

As a test, I just input the calender url for the civicrm drupal demo site. THAT works. Yet the same url from my site does NOT work. What the heck is going on?

I then downloaded the files and tried to compare them, and the only difference I see is that for event ids my site is something like:
UID:CiviCRM_EventID_8_a9a24bcb7687cd2f8d54f0a2e18dc0ea@mysite.org/upgrade-test

where as civi demo site is like:
UID:CiviCRM_EventID_3_9a4567358ff473b52a84e15ae7c843de@drupal.demo.civicrm.org

AH HA. So then I tried inputting my live site (which is still running 2.1...) url with is giving UIDs like:
UID:CiviCRM_EventID_8_a9a24bcb7687cd2f8d54f0a2e18dc0ea@mysite.org

and YES it works. So, my assumption is the feed mapper doesn't like anything that isn't a straight domain? Why? The only other possibility is that when I upgrade my live site to 2.2 and try to set all of this up, then it won't work again. Hopefully that will not be the case.

Once I get this all sorted out and working properly, I vow to put up step-by-step documentation on the wiki as there are way too many conflicting forum topics about this.

Are you able to post the link to this on your live site

http://mysite.org/civicrm/event/ical?reset=1

sorry if that wasn't clear...that's what i said i did in the post above and it worked, thus resulting in my conclusion that the feed api mapper doesn't deal properly with anything that isn't a straight domain. so i set up the documentation on the civi wiki outlining how to do everything :)

Nope - what I  missed was that you had made two more posts since the one I was looking at

Sigh. Well, I went to upgrade the real site and am having the same problem I was originally having.

When I put this url into my feed mapping content type:
http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/event/ical?reset=1

I can map the VEVENT fields just fine.

but when I put in my link:
http://nyscasa.org/civicrm/event/ical?reset=1

no VEVENT fields show up. Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong? I compare these and they look basically the same to me.

I wonder if there is some kind of caching going on?

The only way I could get this to work was to create another new CiviEvent, edit the feed content type, reapply the url, and then it would map. But there were already events in my feed that are upcoming and perfectly fine. I don't understand it, but at least it's working again.

I followed every line of advice in this thread and it's not working out for me.  I ran into every snag emilyf hit (although I never got around to uploading the files).
I'm running Drupal/CiviCRM locally, thus my feed url is: http://localhost/civicrm/event/ical?reset=1
Like her, http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/event/ical?reset=1 worked fine.  What am I doing differently?
I have the Drupal and CiviCRM databases separate from each other.  I know someone suggested that that could be the issue.

you do need to connect your drupal and civicrm dbs via the settings.php file. go to civicrm > administer civicrm > global settings > drupal integration and then paste what you see under 'To enable CiviCRM Views integration, add the following to the site settings.php file:'

hi there, thanks so much for replying.

ok, i did that step, cleared all caches, and created a new feed but nothing changed.
i still only see the 4 mappable fields and the same error:
    * warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /[local install]/sites/all/modules/contrib/parser_ical/parser_ical.module on line 101.
    * warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in /[local install]/sites/all/modules/contrib/parser_ical/parser_ical.module on line 101.

the ical for http://drupal.demo.civicrm.org/civicrm/event/ical?reset=1 still works perfectly when i swap that in so i don't think it's a module problem.

are you on a local install? i wonder if it's some issue with that. some kind of domain name resolve issue, etc.

yep, i'm currently developing the site using mamp.  is this out of the ordinary?
the other civicrm functionality works fine though so i'm not really sure what to do here.

i'm not sure if that's the issue, just throwing out a possible guess based on this post: http://drupal.org/node/473734#comment-1772084
