Not sure if this helps but i had similar problems on Joomla 1.5.12 and CiviCRM 2.2.7
When I moved from localhost to live i had permission issues.

The resoltuion came when i altered the 'civicrm_domain.config_backend' field. I was putting 'NULL' as a value in the field.
So i left it blank and then ran the update/reset url. Hey presto all is well.

I'm running Joomla+CiviCRM on a Mac in MAMP with SSL in a production environment.
It's moving to a new Linux server now but it has served us well for almost a year in its current form.

From what I'm seeing in this thread, your problem has nothing to do with MAMP and everything to do with file/directory permissions and perhaps some CiviCRM settings issues.
