can't locate civicrm.settings.php
September 26, 2014, 01:58:26 am
This is very odd.

I have installed civicrm 4.5 twice now. First as a test, and then I could locate civicrm.settings.php

This time, installing for production, the file civicrm.settings.php is missing...

I followed the install guide:
6. Locate and Backup

 <wordpress>/wp-content/plugins/civicrm/civicrm.settings.php

Anyone tried this?
What do I do? uninstall and install again?
I still have a copy of the file from the test-install, is it difficult to modify?

I'm not sure about the missing file, that is where it should be.  Did the installer run into any errors that you could see as you did Step 5?

As for editing the file, no it's not particularly difficult.  Just open it in a text editor and change the database values (although since you only have one database you might not need to do this), the URLs and the File Paths.

I have now tried installing three times, I get no error, it says install was successfull, but no civicrm.settings.php file is created...
The tables are created in the database, but the plugin does not work...everything I click on just shows the dashboard (see screendump)

When I uninstall, I delete the civicrm folder, the files folder and all the tables created in the database. Am I missing something?

After you do the install, are you able to navigate to the different areas of Civi?  If you are, can you go to Administer-->System Settings-->Clean Up Caches and Update Paths and tell me what he Base Directory and Base URL say (and whether they match the site you are installing on)?

With the exception of the News Box (which I have seen do weirder things) it appears the site is running correctly, so I'm wondering if the Settings file is getting put somewhere weird.

If u have the funds might want to try a version on a CiviCRM speak ialized hosting provider like CiviSites in the UK or others listed here

https://civicrm.org/providers/hosting

Might save u a lot of frustration

Hi Danc

Yes, the menu is there. Some of the pages work, like Administer.

Base directory points at: (hosting adress/) permakultur-danmark.dk/httpd.www/test-wp/wp-content/plugins/files/

And base url points at: http://test-wp.permakultur-danmark.dk/

Today I have tried to install on the test-site, which worked the very first time I installed, but not this time. It didn't create civicrm.settings.php this time.

Seems like the problem occurred when I tried to re-install... Is that a common issue?

Lobo: thank you for the tip. I have written to one of the for price (as it was not on their site). My organisation has a very limited budget. That was one of the reasons for trying civicrm.

This is not a problem that I have seen before, that's why I'm running through all of the troubleshooting steps that I can think of.  My thought right now is that Civi already thinks that you have installed once when you reinstall and that is why it isn't creating the new settings file.  However, that would only happen if some piece isn't being deleted, but is sounded like you were getting everything.  The three pieces that need to be deleted (which you said you got) would be:

  • /permakultur-danmark.dk/httpd.www/test-wp/wp-content/plugins/files/civicrm
  • /permakultur-danmark.dk/httpd.www/test-wp/wp-content/plugins/civicrm (and this is where the settings file should be going)
  • Database tables

Of course this is on a standard install, it is always possible for these locations to be slightly different depending on the server setup and the settings that you define.

Unfortunately I'm at a bit of a loss now without looking at your specific installation and trying it myself.  I know we have a couple others on the boards though that use Wordpress, I'm hoping they might chime in with something.

In later versions, the settings file may be in:
