CiviEvent expanded to include class registration?

We have just started to test using CiviCRM with our Joomla website to help with our Member, Donation, Contacts, Mass Mailing stuff. It seems so far that there is one thing missing for us, a more robust CiviEvent that could handle class registration.

We are a non-profit art school and would need to list more information in each "event" like the instructor, dates the class runs and the times on those separate dates. For example our Fire Spinning class runs Tuesday nights for 7 meetings 7 to 10PM then once on a Saturday from 11 to 2PM.

We also need to break things down into departments and have multiple class offerings under one class heading. For example we have a Blacksmithing Department, under that Introduction to Blacksmithing, which has one class running on Tuesday nights and another running on Saturdays. So if events could have categories with sub-categories, that would be awesome.

Has anyone been tinkering with something like this? Or is there maybe a CiviClass in the works? Or is there a plugin that someone could suggest that could be bridged between CiviCRM, Joomla and Class registration?

Seems like the "more" information for each event can be put in the event intro fields which appears in the event info page, similar to:

http://civicrm.org/civicrm/event/info?reset=1&id=18

CiviCRM does lack a good categorization / taxanomy system for objects. Would be good for the community to step up and contribute this aspect. You potentially can do this with custom fields and some hooks, but might not be too clean. No CiviClass in the works as of now :(
