First mailing 100% send, second mailing stops at 53%

Hi all ...
I have a new organisation that is going to use civicrm in phases.
First phase is getting the newsletter subscribers in civimail and start using civimail for sending out newsletter and press releases.

Last Friday i created 2 groups, and imported 2 csv files for each group.
Group 1: newsletter (3700 subscribers)
Group 2: press (300 subscribers)

I created a new mailing, and send it to the first group (Newsletter). After a few hours all mails where send. Status of the mailing is completed, 100% send.
Tracking is working perfect.
I then created a new mailing, and send it to the 2 groups.
Today i received some phone calls that certain people did not receive this last mailing (These people are in the first group, newsletter).
I looked at the status for this mailing, and it is still "running", 53.73% completed.
When i look at the activity report, i see this mailing, date: September 25th, status complete.

So, in the detail screen for the mailing it has status "running", in the activity report it has status "complete".
It looks to me this is an inconsistency?

Questions:
  • What could be the underlying reason this second mailing didn't complete?
  • Some sort of time out? Where can i check this?
  • If i try resend this mailing, will subscribers that already received this mailing get it once more? Or does it just send to people that didn't receive the first attempt?

Some figures:
  • Running a dedicated server with CentOS 5 and Directadmin.
  • Server is complete up-to-date as far as i know, and thats pretty far :)
  • Drupal 6.14
  • CiviCRM v3 beta 5
  • Mail is being send with sendmail.

Any help highly appreciated!

hi Johan,

can u please check "Mailer Batch Limit" for your Mailer Settings ? is it zero or modified ?

Hi Kiran,
The "Mailer batch limit" is zero.
all fields have the same value as in the sandbox. So, unmodified.

1. do u have the cron job running periodically

2. check your apache error log and see if the php cron job dies on startup?

3. check your mail logs to see if there is any activity when the cron job is running (dont know sendmail to know if it logs or not)

in general we do recommend smtp over sendmail

Hi Lobo,
I have enabled SMTP.
Logs are cluttered so it's hard to go a week back.
Next week we have a new mailing going out, i'm going to keep your 3 points in mind if something goes wrong and report back here!

I've seen similar things happen when an "impossible" address was entered into the system. It's been a while, but from memory it was something like that Exim rejected the email address as impossible, and then CiviCRM didn't know to keep trying from the next email.

I may have remembered incorrectly, but you should be able to scan the DB and see which emails have and haven't gone out ... look at the address after the one which it's stopped on, and see if there's anything odd about it.

Pretty sure the issue was specific to our mailserver configuration (eg, mailserver not configured to recognise an apostrophe in an email address, but CiviCRM thought this was OK). Also thought I remembered that the issue was resolved in 2.x, so that CiviCRM would step onwards if it encountered such an issue.

But worth checking ... it sounds like very similar symptoms. Best of luck!
