Deleting Contacts with Contributions/Payments

We have noticed that if you delete a contact with any contribution / payment associated with it, you also loose record of the payment. Does anyone have any best practise / way of ensuring that payments are not deleted?

Maybe you could create a group for those contacts that you would like to remove from people's view, but don't want to delete related information? Pretty sure contributions have to be associated with a user, like most things in Civi, which means deleting would remove this info.
