DB Error - extension not found

I'm setting up a test server for myself on my laptop into an fresh Joomla install.  Install Civi from directory results in:
Quote
Cannot open mysql://joomla:password@localhost/joomla?new_link=true: DB Error: extension not found

Tested another module install, which worked fine, so the Joomla installer is functioning.  Read the other forum posts on similar errors and that didn't give me any hints...

you need the mysql extension for the civicrm installer to work
