How best to record a Resigned member?

Any advice on how to record a member who has Resigned. Don't see we can do anything within membership types. Effectively all we can do is allocate the End Date to the date they Resigned - but we want to record the fact that they Resigned and, if we know, the reason. There is no 'notes' facility in the Membership section.

Can you create a custom group and custom data for "GP member status" and "GP Notes"
