Automatic Recurring Memberships

I'm surprised I can't find anything about this anywhere... .

CiviMember is a great way to track some important customer-focused concepts like acquisition, attrition, and retention. However, it seems to create a serious inconvenience for our members to renew their monthly memberships. When someone forgets to do this on time, it creates a massive headache in my organization. I believe that other organizations would benefit from automatic recurring memberships as well, but I'd like to know what everyone else thinks.

What I'm thinking is that they ought to be an interface (even if the end user doesn't enter the information) whereby a constituent can sign up for a recurring membership, when the membership is due to be renewed, rather than emailing a reminder, the site would email the member a notice that membership was being automatically renewed and payment was being automatically charged. The user should probably have some ability to stop this payment at that point, or any other really.

What does the community think?

This comes up in the past, but so far no one has stepped up and contributed the code and/or sponsored the development work needed for this. I suspect a solution for the below that interacts with paypal standard recurring is probably 75-150 hours worth of work.

Has this been done now? I've seen at least one site using CiviCRM with automatic recurring payments.

no, but someone did post something on the forums about hacking this and getting it to work for authorize.net recurring.
