Hi all

Can anyone tell me whether it's possible to configure CiviCRM so that all my users are automatically put into a default user group called "Respondants" at registration?

Yes it is possible to do the same. I hope you are using CiviCRM profile during registration.
Check "Add new contacts to a Group?" option in Advanced Settings for Profile.
