Joomla Menus

I am new to CiviCRM.  Work with a small college where we want to be able to share information about contacts, add notes, etc.  I have been searching all day for a way to set up menus on the front-end to access administrative functions in CiviCRM.  My menu setup does not give me any options for CiviCRM Task, which is all I can find in forums.  Is there something that I don't have installed?

Currently you can only access a limited subset of CiviCRM functionality in Joomla front-end. Profile search, listings and view / edit forms. Online contribution pages, event info and registration pages... You can see what's available from the Joomla! Menu Manager (admin site) - when you add a new front-end menu of type CiviCRM.

You can use profiles to share info about contacts and authenticated front-end users can edit their own info via a profile. But otherwise users will need admin-site access.
