Using icons in the autocomplete search
October 20, 2009, 11:10:57 pm
On some of the prototype of the v3, I did put an icon next to each contact, so you could see who is an org, an household or an individual.

Was it dropped for a usability reason or just went missing because shit happens ?

I think we couldn't get the layout to work decently and it seemed to make the return values less readable. Also at least in the data we've seen the type seems obvious for most contacts ("Save the Whales" vs. "Smith, Jason"). Note that with the addition of contact subtypes, this potentially becomes even more interesting :-)

Related to this, I think we will be switching most / all of those icons to css styles in 3.2-ish. And possibly using sprites from one or more civicrm sprite files. This should make it much easier to add or switch these icons - esp if we do the right thing and apply classes to the containers :-) (You can help make sure that happens during release cycle.)
