Usability/Logic issue on the visibility vs. display in a list

Hi,

I want to create a profile to display say the birthday of the contact on a list. So I create a profile and use the advanced search.

Why is that that I need to make the field publicly visible to be able to add it as a column accessible in the private part of the website ?

Is this simply UI issue or is this a deeper in the code ?

i think it was more an issue of using the same code for lots of different things

profiles is used in too many places but reuses a lot of the same code base, so keeping the same meaning across "external"  (profile) and "internal" (while used in search) makes things a wee bit easier from  code perspective

Sure, but why do I have to make external (Publicly visible) an "internal" profile (for search) ?
