Firewall problem - CiviCRM doesn't work through firewall
October 23, 2009, 07:14:01 am
My CiviCRM installation works fine over our LAN, but doesn't work when I connect to it over the internet. I can log in and drupal stuff seems to work without a hitch. But the connection doesn't work right when loading the main CiviCRM page. (it appears to do nothing for a long time, but eventually a partially loaded page comes up, lacking the top CiviCRM menu bar)

Typing "mysqladmin" on the server terminal gets a list of variables including "port [equals]  3306" but our network admin opened up port 3306 for this to no avail.

Does anyone know how to find what port or type-of-traffic needs to be allowed in order for CiviCRM to work correctly?

Civi should be running over port 80 (http) or port 443 (https) unless you've changed your web server...

Not sure this is a firewall problem - might be an issue of browser blocking jscript "cross-site" due to the difference in how you've configured CiviCRM's Base and Resource URL's and how you're accessing the site "over the internet". Are you using the same URL in both cases? The URL you use to access Drupal and CiviCRM must be consistent with what's entered in the CIVICRM_UF_BASEURL in civicrm.settings.php and the Resource URL in Administer CiviCRM >> Global Settings >> Resource URLs.

Dave, it was indeed a problem of the URL's in the settings files. The settings were showing the server's IP address (on our LAN) for the CiviCRM base URL / Resource URL. That IP address is not a valid address except when connecting from within our network at the office.

Problem is fixed.
