Generating and Printing Membership Cards
October 25, 2009, 01:41:48 am
Hi all,

I'm new here. I'm based in Wellington, NZ and I'm evaluating CiviCRM for a medium size non-profit medieval recreation group I am a member of (the New Zealand and Australian arms of The Society for Creative Anachronism, for those of you who've heard of it).

My initial impression is that CiviCRM is a very close fit to what we need, we have a bunch of fairly non-standard requirements which I'll get into in another post, but I wanted to get the really basic question out of the way since I haven't been able to find answer searching the forum or the wiki documentation.

Is there a built-in way to generate and print membership cards for members?

The way our organisation works, we need members to have a physical membership card they carry with them to training and when attending events, and I can't see an obvious way of getting CiviCRM to do this. Am I missing something?

Thanks.

hey - it is small world - also wellington based - and i may also be an anachronism but not sure about the medieval (well not till the archery course starts next week end)

short answer is no - medium answer is you may be able to get what you need (since you don't quite say what it is) via
- Adv Search
- More Actions (once you get some results)
- Print labels - and just make sure you have a label size specified to match your card

I know shrill is doing some work with a drupal card system too which may be what you are after.

Maybe throw some more details below - or chase me up if you want some local hands on guidance.

Hi Peter, thanks for the response.

I've interacted with your civicrm installation as a member of the NZ Greens but it wasn't until I read the book that I realised it was what you used.

I can modify the mailing label geometry to match the size of our membership cards but it's a matter of getting the relevant information on there. I'm a network geek by trade rather than a programmer so I'm comfortable with technical things, I just dont' speak PHP or SQl much.

What we need to have in our membership cards is:
- Legal Name
- SCA Name
- Membership number
- Expiry Date
- Type
- Local Group

How that data gets stored against a member is another issue I'm looking at but assuming it's in the database can it be formatted and inserted into a card template?

Just voting on this one as well. Another priority on our list.

If our members could access everything online such as a membership certificate/card this would cut time, mailing and be a great benefit for members.

Currently many association's like our's allready have this in place. I feel like we are back in the stone age, printing and mailing and taking days.

We want to main stream our association and make it user friendly.

This is a great way to start.

Please vote for this. It will increase your membership signups!

Rather than vote for this, i'd encourage you to contribute code / sponsor a developer to do the needed work so that your association and other associations like yours can benefit

If you want to sponsor the core team to build this out, check:

Hey,

That's a cool page you are pointing people to Lobo :)

As far as membership cards via the mailing labels functionality goes, I'm pretty sure that it isn't very hard to pull any information you want out of CiviCRM and make it available as a token to be used in a mailing label i.e. {some_custom_token} via the CiviCRM hook hook_civicrm_tokens.
