error message - PLEASE ENTER A PACKAGE DIRECTORY
October 26, 2009, 03:39:03 pm
I've attempted to install the "civicrm-3.0.1-joomla.zip" from the tmp directory and I receive the error message "please enter a packeage directory".

I've also tried uploading the file using Joomla!'s component installer and it times out and crashs the admin panel.

I don't have shell access on my GoDaddy server so I am unable to un-tar or un-zip the "civicrm.3.0.1-joomla.zip" directly on the server.  What are my options?

You must unpack the zip file to install from directory.
Use GoDaddy's file manager interface to unzip, or you can install extplorer or another file management utility inside Joomla.

Well, I used GoDaddy's file utility to un-zip the "civicrm-3.0.1-joomla.zip" file and tried to install from the directory:

/tmp/com_civicrm

and I get the same error message.

There are three files in the exploded "com_civicrm" directory:

"civicrm.xml", "install.civicrm.php" and "uninstall.civicrm.php".

I tried adding the first two (one at a time) to the directory string and received the same error.

Any suggestions?

I went back to the installation documentation and saw the tip:

"put the full file system path to the  com_civicrm, something like /home/yourusername/public_html/yourjoomladirname/tmp/com_civicrm/"

using the full file system path worked.

Thanks for putting me on the right track.
