I'm looking for a solution or work-around to a problem I'm having with doing data entry for event participations....

We are doing data entry for checks that people gave to us while attending a fundraising event. The problem though is that their checks are for arbitrary amounts and there is no easy way from the CiviCRM interface to enter an event registration for an arbitrary amount. I tried making a new price set with a one dollar increment as a work-around, but I am running into several bugs with that functionality that are kind of difficult to describe. The bugs are preventing us from doing the data entry. We have a lot of data entry to do in a short period of time, so having the ability to record the contribution and event registration in one screen is pretty crucial. Is there an easier way to have the event fee just be a free-form box like it can be on a contribution page?

(I understand how it might not be a good idea to offer a free form box to the the general public, but it would be hugely helpful if it were free form when entering event participations manually.)
