So I have a question. Do all new contacts have to be added via an import step/process, and can they be added directly to the tables via a script etc.

The reason that I ask is I am in a situation that I need to sync 2 databases it rather than run a merge/import I wanted to write a sync script, but that means all the new data would be added directly to the database, and not have gone through an import / data creation process within civi... Can this be done?

IF not, does anyone have any good ideas about database syncing?

contacts can be added directly to the tables via your own custom script. you can also use the api (which might be a wee bit safer to begin with) to add contacts to the db
