Event Registration and Inadvertant Self-Modification
November 01, 2009, 09:13:46 pm
It looks like CiviEvent registration presumes you are always registering yourself first [in this case, when signed in to Drupal].  Any changes made to e-mail (and other profile fields, if they're exposed) for the first sign-up modifies your own profile.  Subsequent registrations (after noting http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,10553.0.html and http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,10052.0.html) will create new contacts.

Anyone got a suggestion how to get the first sign-up to behave like the others, and inhibit this automatic self-modification?

Since I have unprivileged coordinators signing up various other adults over time, this means even fixing it "with training" will yield duplicate coordinator sign-ups every time they visit.

(I wonder if http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-4855 in 3.0.2 fixes my duplicate registration concern)

I'm actually not too sure the change in CRM-4855 to bypass the "already registered" check for events which allow "Multiple registrations from same email address" was a good idea :-( That flag was primarily designed to extend the "Register multiple participants" during a single event signup feature for cases where the Additional Participants did NOT have their own email addresses.

That said, I think you might be better off having your coordinators do the registrations as anonymous, rather than logged in. Or giving them sufficient perms to use the "back-office" event registration form.

Thanks for the honest response.  My takeaway is that Event Registration won't work for my target constituents (hundreds of Team Managers with the expertise to send in a paper form to staff that doesn't exist).  Time for some Tums. :'(
