Is 'Find Activities' missing from CiviCRM?
November 03, 2009, 07:00:59 am
Hi there,

Oliver Gibson and I have been discussing a new Activity report that we want to commission.  As part of this discussion we went off on the following tangent.

There is Find Members, Find Contributions, Find Contacts, etc. functionality in CiviCRM but no 'Find Activities' functionality.

That seems like a bit of a gap and something that would be really useful as a way of looking at the work that you've done with contacts in the DB, and updating it.

I think we'd both still like the report done, but would also be really interested:
* in core team's reasoning behind not having this (is it as simple as no one asked for it?), and
* to hear if other people would find this functionality useful

Cheers!

Michael

there is a custom search for activities:

Oh yeah!  ;D (i think you might have even brought my attention to that before)

And I see you can export to csv as well.

This doesn't allow searching on or export of custom data though, I don't think.  I'm trying to work out what other useful parts might be missing.
Is there any appetite here for doing the following:

* Souping up the custom activity search interface a bit by allowing inclusion of custom data in searches
* Creating a new activities menu to include things like New activity, import activities, find activities
* any other improvement to find activities, anyone?
Cheers,
Michael

Hey Michael. The three improvements you mention would be great. Especially extending the search to include custom data. But to be clear do you mean custom data for contacts or custom data fields for activity records? Or both? Both is ideal of course.

A related one would be to include an "action" to delete activities.
And a small one would be to not show "Null" when there is no subject.

thanks for working on this Michael! Our clients would really love these improvements.

A recent forum request was to do the negation:

i.e. Find all the contacts who did NOT have a specific activity (or maybe activity type?)

Hello people,

Thanks for the feedback on this thread.  UR right - the null is v. important, as is custom data on both fields.

Tony - this wiki page should (more than) answer your questions on the kinds pf query we'd like to run.

Despite the specific title and content, you should feel free to add to that should you be so inclined :)

http://wiki.civicrm.org/confluence/display/CRM/Activity+report+for+LIOs and feel free to add there.

Quick update on this post.  We are still very keen on this and I'm in the process of drumming up support.

Wanted to add here another thing we'd like to see in a final spec:

Custom data for contacts appears as well as custom data for the activties.  So you can say how many How many *support* activities have been delivered to *BME* organisations.

hey Michael,
see this as first step improvements:
http://issues.civicrm.org/jira/browse/CRM-5542

i have specs for extending this so that when an activity is selected, any custom fields unique to that activity type are then available for searching. i have a client who is considering sponsoring it, but they've not made a decision yet. if you still have interest, we could talk about pooling funds. it's not a huge amount of work.

There's been some discussion on IRC about having Find Activities along the lines of Find Participants, with a set of activity-related tasks that can be performed on the found activities, just as Find Participants has participant-related tasks. E.g. bulk change of assignee or status.
