Key error with Joomla

Using CiviCRM 1.7 with Joomla, if I try registering for an event as a user (example url: /index.php?option=com_civicrm&task=civicrm/event/register&id=1&reset=1), I get the following error after entering email address and clicking continue:

This is a simple event with online registration, but is not a paid event, and has no custom fields.
