I'm feeling rather silly but

I just went to turn on recurring contributions where I thought I would find it

http://sandbox.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/contribute?reset=1&action=update&id=2&subPage=Amount

The description for this link says

"Enable pledges OR recurring contributions (recurring contributions are not supported for all payment processors)."

but I can't see where I enable recurring contributions - in this sandbox version (3.1) or in 3.0 or in the Floss manual. In the sandbox version (link) the payment processor type is definitely set to process recurring contributions:

http://sandbox.civicrm.org/civicrm/admin/paymentProcessorType?action=update&id=2&reset=1

I must be blind.

Ah - caught out again - the payment processor type table only holds the defaults and updating it doesn't update the existing processors so just looking at the values you can see through the GUI isn't enough.

It does seem a bit misleading - that you can change the payment processor type to be recurring but it won't change your existing processor? A bug perhaps?

yes a bug (but a minor one IMO)

we dont expect folks to tweak payment processor settings at all. that form was primarily written to make it easier to enter the PP type values

if you feel its important, please do provide a patch to fix the bug

Whether it's worth fixing depends a bit on how you are going to roll out the new recurring paypal pro recurring functionality. - ie. turn it on for all or allow people to choose.

I'm not sure if with some payment processors recurring contributions is an optional service.
