Importing members from CSV and CiviCRM fields in dropdown
November 09, 2009, 02:52:58 pm
Another post-three-versions upgrade question (recently upgraded from 2.0 through 2.1,2.2 to 3.0)...

Previously we could import CSVs of member data and match fields such as "first name" and "last name".  This import would add the first and last name and attach to a drupal user based on the email address. Currently the dropdown for matching fields is much smaller (see screenshot). Is this a change from 2.0 to 3.0 or merely a setting that got switched off somewhere in the process?

Thanks!

Make sure you select "Insert Memberships" rather than "Update Memberships" for Import Mode in Step 1. It looks like you've selected "Update Memberships" - which is only for modifying data in existing CiviMember Membership records - and requires you to pass in the existing MEMBERSHIP ID's in order to match import data to the memberships.

Here's a screenshot from the public demo of the "matching" options you should be seeing if you've selected "Insert" mode AND you have the default "Strict Matching Rule" for Individuals (Find and Merge Duplicate Contacts)

Thanks, Dave.

I tried it both ways (Insert and Update) but didn't have success either way.

In the demo site, for example, how would I get the "first name" and "last name" fields into the dropdown list to match up with fields in the CSV I'm importing? It looked the same as on my site (and the screenshot you attached) -- no way to match them because they're not listed in the dropdown.

The available "match to contact" fields for Membership Insert are:
- Contact ID
AND
- External ID
AND
- any fields configured in your default Strict Dupe Matching rule for Individuals. This is Email Address (only) by default. So if for some reason you want to match on more / other fields to find matches to existing contacts - you can modify the Strict Matching rule and then you'll see the fields you've added to the matching rule in your dropdown.
