Please tell me how I should go about extending the JoinDate so that I can enter members for years prior to 1989.

CiviCRM:   3.0.2
CMS:   Drupal
MySQL:   5.0.85
PHP:   5.2.6

You might want to try to increase the date range for 'activityDate'.

go to Administer CiviCRM -> Global Settings ->  Date Formats -> Advanced Date Input Settings -> edit 'activityDate' Start Offset and  End Offset
the given range w/ offsets will reflect on the Membership form.

That's the thing! Thank you for your assistance. That was way easier than the old file-editing method I turned up through searching.
