VERP in from address results in "on hold" for all email addresses sent.
November 10, 2009, 07:29:48 am
Hi -

CiviMail seems to be setting the From address to the VERP email address.  Perhaps I have misunderstood, I had thought that it was meant to put the VERP email address in the reply to, but leave the from alone.   The result of this on my BlueHost server is that emails from CiviMail do not go through and that every email address I try to send to gets marked on hold.  (Note that if I send an email from the CiviCRM interface, there is no problem.

I contacted BlueHost and this is the error in the server:

2009-11-10 07:01:41 H=localhost (www.ny-best.org) [127.0.0.1] F=<b.52.19.59f0b0e97e74cc31@ny-best.org> rejected RCPT <info@ny-best.org>: Sender verify failed

Technician tells me that the F stands for "From" and that must match an existing email address.   I have tried both with VERP override and not.    I've read both http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php?topic=8330.0 and http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,6440.0.html but I need some help determining what to check next.

- Anne

Note that I switched to sendmail rather than SMTP and that resolved the problem.  Are their drawbacks to doing it via sendmail rather than SMTP?

Thanks Lobo.  That's very good to know.  We're not doing bounce tracking right now, but clearly need to.  I'd like to go back to SMTP if I could get it to work.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to debug this issue?  I'm not even really sure if this behavior (from address contains VERP address) is the expected behavior or not.

I've been seeing a lot of problems with Bluehost and Civimail... search for 'bluehost and civimail'

See: http://forum.civicrm.org/index.php/topic,4742.0.html

The sendmail option is the only thing that worked for us on Bluehost.

Did you manage to fix the problem? I am having the same problem and it is really important that I fix it. I ca not send newsletters with the FROM address looking like this: civicrmb.16.13.0d5f0f9b970bd1f3@ratiudemocracycenter.org.
