how in the world to go from 1.7.x to 3.0.1?

I have been tasked with trying to figure out how to get from 1.7.x to 3.0.1?  The problem is that the main developer has already upgrade Drupal to version 6 and just installed 3.0.1, not sure what they were thinking.  I figure I have to do the following:

1.  Make a development copy of their current Drupal 5 / Civicrm site
2.  Upgrade from 1.7.x to 1.9 using the civicrm docs and upgrade tools.
3.  Upgrade from 1.9 to 2.0 using the civicrm docs.
4.  Upgrade from 2.0 to 2.1 using the civicrm docs.

Now this is where it gets tricky, and I'm a little confused.  2.2 was the first release the no longer supported Drupal 5, so somehow we have to upgrade from 2.1 to 2.2 before we can go from 2.2 to 3.  So if 2.2 doesn't run on 5, then how do I upgrade it if 2.1 is running on 5, do I first upgrade Drupal 5 to Drupal 6 and leave civicrm at 2.1, and then proceed to upgrade to 2.2 and then on to 3?

Does anyone think this whole process will work?

After 4th step, I would upgrade 2.1 to latest 2.2.x and then upgrade it to 3.0.x

So once you upgrade to 2.1, upgrade your drupal to 6. Then upgrade 2.1 to 2.2.x
