Message templates in future releases
November 14, 2009, 12:08:44 pm
This is a question rather than an observation.

I understand that in 3.1 Message Templates are stored in the database.

In future releases, I imagine that these default templates will change.

If I have not modified a Message Template, I would expect that the default is replaced with the default in the new release.

If I have modified it, I would expect it would not be replaced, but I would have a subsequent opportunity to edit my template to take advantage of changes in the default.

How is it envisaged this scenario will work?

If this scenario has not yet been catered, can I suggest ...

 * have a default version of each template
 * any local edits to the template are stored in a local copy of the template
 * it is the default version which is updated during releases
 * when editing the local version, the user has access to the read-only content of the default template, for reference purposes

Thanks
Ken

the system keeps a pristine copy of the default templates. You cannot edit these templates from the UI. All modifications are done on a copy of these templates

in an upgrade we will upgrade the default version and not the modified versions. It will be the users responsibility to upgrade the modified version. We hopefully will provide a status message reminding the user to do so (or add it to the upgrade instructions)

Lobo,

Thanks for your prompt reply, and helpful answer!

Also, congratulations on the new release. I look forward to each release because there is always a number of gems that make our CiviExperience just that little bit better each time.

Ken
