Why might some fields not show in User Reg profile but show in User Edit

hi - 2.2.8 drupal set up - Profile used for User Reg and Edit

at /user/xx/edit/<name of profiile> the fields are showing, but just realised they aren't showing at /user/register

Have tested on demo and works fine.

The fields in question are of type checkbox and note in case that is relevant. Tx

Does logged in user has access custom data permission?
